The DJI Phantom 3 Professional quadcopter is a compact, lightweight drone that offers a great flying experience and high quality aerial video recording. It is currently the only consumer quadcopter that can shoot 4K UHD video. The camera is stabilized by a gimbal system that enables you to shoot very crisp videos and photographs. With the improved Lightbridge technology, you can now enjoy 720p HD live digital video streaming on a mobile device and YouTube.
Outdoor flying with this drone is possible within a flight range of 2000 meters. Indoor flying has also been enhanced with new vision and ultrasonic sensors that allow you to fly with precision without relying on GPS. A feature-rich mobile app also makes it easy for you to edit videos and share them on social media channels. DJI has provided this quadcopter in a ready-to-fly bundle so it is easy for both amateur and experienced pilots to set it up and fly. This DJI Phantom 3 Professional review gives you more details about the features and functions of this drone.
DJI Phantom 3 is a well designed quadcopter, with a strong white plastic frame and four landing struts that can protect the camera and withstand the shock of landing. Plastic propellers screw unto the rotors which are present on each of its four wings. From wing to wing the aircraft measures about 23 inches. To help you know whether the connection to the transmitter is working, LED lights shine under each of the wings. The lights have different colors, so it is easy to discover the direction of flight. This is a very useful feature when flying at night.
Phantom 3 Professional has very good build quality. From the rotors, to the sturdy aircraft body, to the camera and gimbal, everything is engineered to absorb shocks from landing and minor crashes. With a very light body weight of about 1.28 kg, this quadcopter is very portable and can easily be stored along with the transmitter inside a backpack. The motor and rotors that power the Phantom 3 have been upgraded; their improved efficiency now permits a longer flying period.
The feature-rich DJI Pilot App gives you total control of the camera. It can also be used to control some aspects of the aircraft’s navigation like the maximum height. But flying and landing must be done using the remote controller. The app was designed for phones and tablets that use either Android 4.2.2 or later and iPhone 5s and above. You can use the app to record videos, take pictures, tilt or pan the camera and control its aperture. Other features include video editing, and live streaming to your mobile device. The app provides an excellent live view at 720p HD while it records 4K UHD unto an microSD card. You can also use the flight simulation feature to practice and hone your flying skills.
The transmitter has a brilliant white color and a sleek user-friendly design. For a very comfortable grip, the edges have a rubber matte that prevents slipping. You can use the transmitter to fly the drone in either manual or automatic mode. This remote controller has an integrated clip for a mobile device and two USB ports (standard and micro) for connecting the mobile device. Thus, you can see the effect of any dial or button you activate in real time, on the screen of your tablet.
On the front of the transmitter, there are two joysticks for flight control, an emergency return home button, and a power button. Here you can also see dials to control camera exposure and tilt the gimbal, as well as buttons to start recording video or snap a photograph. This transmitter is powered by a 6000 mAh lithium polymer battery and it can control the drone within a 2-kilometer radius.
The built-in camera has a 20mm rectilinear lens and a viewing angle of about 90 degrees. It is supported with an integrated stabilization gimbal system operating on three axes. The camera is not interchangeable but it offers excellent performance and captures very smooth, steady and sharp video footage. It can shoot at various resolutions up to a maximum of 4K with an Ultra High Definition (UHD) in daylight. Still photo graphs have a 12 MP resolution in JPEG or DNG RAW format.
Phantom 3 Professional is powered by a 4480 mAh lithium polymer battery. This battery offers an average flight time of about 25 minutes based on the flight conditions. The manufacturer’s AC charger provides 100W of power to charge the battery. Battery status is displayed on the remote controller with LED indicators. The drone will automatically return home (based on your previous settings) immediately the battery runs low. The battery takes about 30 minutes to charge. So if you plan to fly for very long periods, it is better to buy a spare battery when you purchase the drone.
